Art of Chaos
With this series I explored levels of chaos utilizing abstract compositions and multiple exposure. Using multiple exposure allowed me to achieve a greater sense of chaos because I had less control over composition. This body of work is influenced by characteristics of Abstract Expressionism which have an emphasis on emotional expression and spontaneous creativity. Unlike the Abstract Expressionists of the 40’s and 50’s who were predominately painters, I photographed oil and water. I was still able to achieve that same gestural quality of expression with how I mixed the oil and water before I photographed it.
In terms of technical aspects of this series, when multiple exposing I did not concentrate on how the images were superimposed in camera. I felt that just shooting and not planning compositions would add to the idea of inner expression and chaos. Furthermore, I used a medium format camera because it allowed me to multiple expose in camera in the same frame without having to reload and reshoot every time to multiple expose. The final prints were made and matted in a square format.
This was an alternative take on my Emotions series. Where instead of shooting 35mm and using cliche verre with this series I used 120mm and double exposed the oil and water.
